My career has prepared me well for my position on the Board of Ed. I am currently a Vice President of Marketing for an international company. In my leadership role I supervise a diverse team and have to manage the sometimes diverging needs and opinions of my staff, my peers and senior management. Getting to a successful consensus is a nonnegotiable part of my position that requires me to listen, communicate clearly and effectively, take all options into consideration, and then move forward with the best plan.
One thing I have learned during my time on the board is that a school district does not operate in any way like a corporate entity. Our district is very lucky to be filled with educators and administrators with extensive education and degrees in teaching and running a district. The expertise they need from the board is not to tell them how to do their job better, it is to offer an outside perspective and express the voice and concerns of the community.
